Parade of Large Mechanical Installation “Spirit of the Dragon-Horse”

The Dragon-Horse will prance and dance! A distinctive and colourful parade will take place in Macao. In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR), the Parade of Large Mechanical Installation “Spirit of the Dragon-Horse”, which is organised by the Macao SAR Government and undertaken by the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), will commence on 22 November. The 12-metre-tall giant mechanical Dragon-Horse will make its debut in Macao. It will parade with a number of local and overseas performing groups to mark a climax in the year of double celebrations.

The focus of this parade will be on the large mechanical installation Dragon-Horse which was jointly designed and created by the Winland Creative Foundation Limited and the French association of mechanical installation art La Machine.

The Dragon-Horse was created in 2014, the year of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-France diplomatic relations. It was the Year of the Dragon when the diplomatic relations between China and France were established and the 50th anniversary of such relations was the Year of the Horse. In celebration of this commemorative year, over a hundred Chinese and French professionals spent a year to design and create the large mechanical installation combining a dragon head with a horse body, and it was named “Spirit of the Dragon-Horse”. It has performed in Mainland China, Canada, France and other places, and attracted universal praise.

The Dragon-Horse is made of special wood and weighs 47 tonnes. The whole body is yellow and the heart is a thermoelectric power engine. With a variety of accessories and the complicated structure, it requires 15 people to control its operation during the performance. Its scale, weight, artistic creation, craftsmanship and technique are currently top throughout the world. Measuring 18 metres in length, 5 metres in width and 12 metres in height when prancing, it is equipped with built-in mechanical structure, hydraulic power transmission, electronic induction control system, etc. With a unique appearance, the Dragon-Horse is capable of running, prancing, bending legs, moving backwards, blinking, turning the neck and ears, wagging the tail, as well as spurting fire and puffing smoke. It is like a mechanical giant beast that is as vivid as life.

The Dragon-Horse is a fusion of French advanced technology and the spirit of the Chinese nation, symbolising the continuous self-improvement, concerted effort and proactive attitude of the Chinese. It is a unique product of art and technology created by infusing art into mechanical technique. Meanwhile, it integrates with the public space in the city and interacts with the public during the parade performance to form a mechanical theatre that breaks new ground. Making its debut in Macao this time, the Dragon-Horse will roll over, dance, spurt fire and sway in the urban and tourist areas on the islands, unfolding a rare scene.

In addition to the Dragon-Horse, the Vorraratsuksa Nonthaburi Marching Band of Thailand, the Flagpole waving art group of Hebei, the Macau Lo Leong Sport General Association and the Associao de Danas e Cantares Portuguesa “Macau no Corao” will form a parade team of over 300 people to present various performances with cultural characteristics. Moreover, there will be large floating balloons of giant pandas, flying dragon and performers in inflatable costumes to create a grand and fabulous page in the series of activities in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR.

The commencement ceremony of the Parade of Large Mechanical Installation “Spirit of the Dragon-Horse” will take place at 5:00 p.m. on 22 November (Friday) in the coach parking area in Estrada Governador Albano de Oliveira in Taipa (opposite the Macau Jockey Club).
