The construction of Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (also commonly known as "San Ma Lou") was completed in 1918. Since the start of a series of reclamation project, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro has been a bustling and flourishing street. It also serves as an important gateway connecting the South Bay (Nam Van) to the Inner Harbour and what was once the North Bay (now inundated).
Aside from the crowds of people at Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro near the new South Bay, one can also find old-style mansions lining both sides of the road, stretching westwards. The mansions served as a reminder of the good old days of "San Ma Lou".
