Built in the late 18th century, the building once was the villa of a wealthy Portuguese merchant and the residence of the representative of East India Company in China. It was converted to Luis de Cames Museum in the 1960s and the Orient Foundation in the 1990s. As George Smirnoff had visited the site and did paintings there, some of his works became the Museum’s permanent collection after his death. The Museum held a memorial exhibition on George Smirnoff in its 25th anniversary.
