Introduction:
The 5,823m2 wetland in the valley northwest of Alto de Coloane of Macao is a conservation zone of wetland ecosystems. The area had a small stream which would run dry during the dry season, and its surrounding trees were overgrown and woven together by creeping plants and vines. With the intention to improve the terrestrial ecology of Macao by creating new wetlands for the city, the valley was transformed to fulfil the necessary conditions that allow wetland ecosystems to develop in 2007. Channels were created to divert the flow of mountain stream water, ponds were excavated and a flow regulation dam was built over 10 metres long to expand the water body and increase water retention time. These are fundamental to recreating a stable aquatic environment and nourish the soil. A diverse species of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants native to Southern China have been planted to create plant communities with enhanced structures that would stimulate biodiversity and provide food, shelter and nursing ground for many wildlife species in a wetland environment.
Note:
An application for visit to the wetland is required.
